Influence of recording equipment on the identification of second language phoneme contrasts

چکیده
This paper investigates the perceptual quality of English words recorded by different types of microphones to assess their availability in Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) systems. English words minimally contrasting in /r/ and /l/, /b/ and /v/, or /s/ and /th/ were recorded from native female and male speakers of American English using six different microphones. The phonemic contrasts in these recordings were then evaluated by 14 native listeners of American English. The results showed that the identification of the /r/–/l/ contrast was unaltered by the difference in microphones, whereas that of the /s/–/th/ contrast significantly dropped with several headset microphones, and that of the /b/–/v/ contrast dropped with a tie-pin microphone. These findings suggest that some microphones are not appropriate for speech perception training. Finally, a post hoc equalization procedure was applied to compensate for the acoustic characteristics of the microphones tested, and this procedure was confirmed to be effective in recovering phonemic contrasts under several conditions.

This work explores development in the perception of Japanese singleton and geminate consonant contrasts among native speakers of English learning Japanese as a second language. The primary goal of this paper is to show that the second language (L2) acquisition of phoneme contrasts that are not present in the first language (L1) exhibits development that is predictable from the acoustic properti...

متن کاملExploring the role of hand gestures in learning novel phoneme contrasts and vocabulary in a second language
Co-speech hand gestures are a type of multimodal input that has received relatively little attention in the context of second language learning. The present study explored the role that observing and producing different types of gestures plays in learning novel speech sounds and word meanings in an L2. Naïve English-speakers were taught two components of Japanese-novel phonemic vowel length con...

This study investigates how phonology, morphology, and prosody affect phoneme identification within sentences. The influence of these factors was examined in a phoneme monitoring task with Australian-English and SecondLanguage-English Mandarin-Chinese participants monitoring for /n/ in four morphological contexts (part of a word stem, correct/altered grammatical inflection, or derivational infl...
